Florida is home to so many springs. Residents and visitors alike love to explore the calming waters and lush green scenery. There are many to choose from in the Sunshine State, but none are quite as unique as Devil’s Den, a prehistoric underground spring located just two hours north of Orlando in Williston, FL.
Micanopy is Florida’s self-proclaimed antiques capital. Named in honor of a Seminole Indian chief and settled in 1821, the Alachua County town of Micanopy about 15 minutes south of Gainesville features dozens of antique shops, many on tree-lined Cholokka Boulevard. The street also is the site of Micanopy’s annual Fall Harvest Festival which consists of music and crafts. The scene is heavy on greenery, making Micanopy a pleasant spot to while away an afternoon beneath the oaks.
The Tamiami Trail stands as one of Florida’s and America’s great highways. Connecting Tampa to Miami, the Tamiami Trail consists of the last 275 miles of Highway 41 and is an engineering feat, built through the forest and the swampy Everglades. This drive is known as the Windows to the Gulf Coast Water Scenic Highway and is a dynamic mix of old and new Florida, culture, and architecture, a tropical wonderland, unassuming and just plain flashy. There is just so much to do and see along this drive, consider staying over a day or two or more!
The Atlantic Coast city of Stuart, known as the “Sailfish Capital of the World,” is located along Florida’s renowned Treasure Coast, north of Palm Beach and south of Vero Beach. Along with fishing and other water-intensive pleasures, Stuart is famed for its historic and pedestrian-friendly downtown. The Stuart Green Market is held every Sunday from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. near City Hall. The Stuart Heritage Museum and Road to Victory Military Museum are not to be missed. St. Augustine’s rich heritage makes the city and its surroundings a unique getaway for visitors. Delray Beach is a place that proudly puts its rich history on display. The Spady Cultural Heritage Museum preserves and showcases the heritage and innumerable contributions of African Americans in Palm Beach County. You find much more than a moment of zen at Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens; founded as a farming colony by Japanese immigrants more than 100 years ago, the museum features six lush gardens inspired by the famous gardens of Japan and is perfect for a relaxing afternoon stroll. South Pointe Park is a beautiful green space at the southern tip of Miami Beach. It offers stunning panoramic views of the South Beach shoreline, PortMiami’s cruise ships, Downtown Miami’s skyline, and Fisher Island. The park has direct access to the beach as well as walking trails, picnic and barbecue areas, benches, a cafe, and an off-leash bark park. There is also a mini water playground perfect for cooling off on a warm day, along with a jungle gym and lush landscaping. Best yet, Smith & Wollensky Steakhouse is located in the park, with delicious dine-in and carry-out options.
Laid-back and natural, Anna Maria Island awaits a mere 20 minutes from Bradenton. A seven-mile strip of beautiful white-sand beaches lines the barrier island of Anna Maria Island between the turquoise Gulf of Mexico and peninsular Florida. Also found near Anna Maria Island, at the southern mouth of Tampa Bay, are the cities of Longboat Key, Lido Key, Siesta Key, Casey Key, Venice, and Manasota Key. Strict regulations govern the type of buildings and businesses allowed on Anna Maria Island, giving it an old-time feel. But excellent dining seafood, of course! is very much encouraged. Sanibel Island, located along the Gulf of Mexico just a short drive from Fort Myers, is justly famed for its sunsets, lighthouse, and luxurious resorts.
